The project for the new Belgian Embassy in Mexico was conceived as an opportunity to preserve the memory of the former building by integrating elements of its footprint, dominant vegetation, and reused materials into a contemporary proposal that bridges past and future. The project’s significance lies in its ability to express the historic relationship between the two nations while addressing current needs regarding security, functionality, and diplomacy. Natural light, a connection to the surroundings, and the creation of spaces that convey both protection and openness serve as central themes, offering users and visitors a unique and memorable architectural experience. The architectural design—ranging from the spatial layout (integrating two residences and an embassy divided into three sections on a single site) to the materiality (reclaiming and reinterpreting elements of the old building through a sensory and sustainable approach)—reflects this vision. The landscaping incorporates ecological and cultural principles to create a living system that connects biodiversity, water, and the shared memory of Mexico and Belgium. Thus, the new embassy not only meets diplomatic and urban requirements but also stands as a benchmark for responsible design and international cooperation.
