On Vasconcelos Avenue, the old road to Tacubaya, an area of ​​middle-class housing developed during the 19th century characterized by eclectic architecture, with quarry ornamentation on doors and windows, sloping tile roofs, ironworks and stained glass.
The project consisted of the intervention and adaptation of one of these houses, which preserves many of its original elements in good condition. The proposal started from recognizing and preserving the existing architectural character, incorporating only the necessary modifications to improve its functioning and contemporary habitability.
The ventilation and natural lighting conditions of the lobby were improved and maintenance was carried out on the existing windows with the aim of reducing the incidence of noise coming from the avenue. Likewise, the carpentry, quarry moldings, decorative plaster elements, walls, floors and kitchen were restored, trying to preserve the original materials, proportions and details of the home.
The intervention also incorporated new uses derived from the needs of the client, who, as a musician, requested the integration of a recording studio within the house. At the same time, rooms and bathrooms were adapted for temporary guests.
The project seeks to establish a balance between conservation and adaptation, incorporating new uses without altering the structure or general character of the house. The intervention understands pre-existence not as a limitation, but as the main element on which a new stage of housing is built.
